Becoming a Mental Health Champion

I was recently offered the opportunity to attend a one-day Mental Health Awareness Champions course facilitated by Mental Health First Aid England. The experience was both enlightening and empowering, providing me with invaluable insights into mental health and equipping me with the tools to make a difference in my role and the larger community. In this post, I want to share my thoughts, the knowledge I gained, and why I believe courses like this are essential in today’s world.

The Start of the Journey

The day began with a warm welcome from our course leader Ruth - a seasoned mental health professional with years of experience in the field. The virtual classroom was filled with 20 faces from a variety of backgrounds and businesses across the UK. It was clear from the start that all participants shared a common goal: to better understand mental health and learn how to support those who might be struggling. From the outset, the atmosphere was one of openness and mutual respect, and all participants were clearly engaged.

Understanding Mental Health

Our first session focused on defining mental health. We learnt that mental health is more than the absence of mental illness; it’s a state of well-being in which an individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to contribute to their community. This holistic view of mental health emphasised the importance of looking beyond symptoms and considering the whole person.

Common Mental Health Conditions

The course then delved into common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. We explored the signs and symptoms of these conditions, which was eye-opening. For example, I learned that depression is not just about feeling sad; it can manifest in various ways, including changes in sleep patterns, appetite, and energy levels. Understanding these nuances is crucial for recognising when someone might be in need of help.

The Power of Communication

One of the most impactful sessions was on communication skills. We were taught how to have compassionate and effective conversations about mental health. Ruth introduced us to techniques such as active listening, validating emotions, and avoiding judgmental language. We practised these skills through role-playing exercises, which helped build our confidence in addressing sensitive topics. This session highlighted the importance of creating a safe space for others to share their experiences.

Support Strategies

The course provided practical strategies for supporting someone experiencing a mental health crisis. We learned about the importance of early intervention, how to approach someone we’re concerned about, and the steps to take if they are in immediate danger. The emphasis was on being a supportive presence rather than trying to fix the problem, which often requires professional intervention. This approach reinforces the idea that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer is our empathy and understanding.

The Importance of Self-Care

Amidst all the learning, the course also stressed the importance of self-care. We discussed the various ways to maintain our own mental health, such as engaging in regular physical activity, practising mindfulness, and seeking support when needed. This session was a crucial reminder that to effectively support others, we must first take care of ourselves. Ruth shared resources and techniques for managing stress and building resilience, which I found incredibly useful.

Personal Reflections and Community Impact

As the day drew to a close, we had a chance to reflect on what we had learned and how we could apply it in our lives. The discussions were heartfelt, with many participants sharing their personal motivations for attending the course. For me, the course reinforced my belief that mental health awareness is not just a professional obligation but a personal responsibility.

Equipped with the knowledge and skills from this course, I feel more confident in my ability to support those around me. Whether it’s recognising the signs of a mental health issue in a friend or initiating a conversation about mental health at work, I am now better prepared to make a positive impact. The course also inspired me to advocate for mental health awareness more broadly, whether through social media, community events, or simply by being open about my own experiences.

To sum up...

Attending the one-day Mental Health Awareness Champions course was an invaluable experience. It provided me with a deeper understanding of mental health, practical skills for supporting others, and a renewed commitment to promoting mental well-being in my community. I encourage everyone to consider taking a similar course; not only will it equip you with valuable tools, but it will also contribute to a more empathetic and supportive society.
